Deterioration of our hearing ability starts when we are in our late teens. Recent studies in Australia show one third of “elementary” children already experience hearing loss. In North America one out of seven adults have hearing loss and 12.5% of children 6-19 years old who use iPods or MP3s. Most people will not do anything about it. The first reason is money. Hearing aids cost too much! The second is being too embarrassed or vain to wear a hearing device. But did you know that you can improve your hearing naturally with vitamins and supplements? Find out more.
Statistics show that only 15% of people who need hearing aids get them
High frequencies are the first to go. This has led to the development of what young people call the “mosquito’ or Teen Buzz ring tone. It rings on your phone at a pitch thirty year old’s can’t hear any longer. If your teen suddenly jumps up from the table it’s not to go to the bathroom, it’s to answer the phone.
In 2006 they came up with a sound track called Buzzin’ that sent one set of melodies to younger children while older people heard something entirely different. Scary really.
City noise and pollution have gone up by 1/3 in the last 50 years
Another scary set of stats is that the ambient sound in our cities has gone up a whopping one third in the last fifty years. Dr. Shapiro’s study shows how air pollution has gone up the same amount in the same time period. This is an all out assault on the ears. We need regulations that support the whole human being.
Speed limits for cars, volume limits for personal listening devices
At the turn of the century cars started rolling off the assembly lines and accidents started to follow. Lots of them. So, in no time at all they got together and created Speed Limits to limit the accidents that were occurring. We need to put some limits on the listening devices people use today to prevent a tidal wave of people with hearing loss forty years from now.
Listening devices can cause you hearing loss in just ten minutes!
It was different when we were young and the batteries for your Sony Walkman only lasted a few hours. Today with iPods, Mp3s and ear buds we can listen to thousands of songs at the same volume as a jet taking off. This is going to cause some permanent hearing damage or age related hearing loss.
“Once your hearing is gone, it’s gone!” … Not true!
The old adage of “once it’s gone, it’s gone” no longer applies. If you act quickly enough there are many things you can do to repair and return your hearing to a more natural state. It’s not just the supplements that we can recommend to help you, but there are other approaches and modalities that can help as well.
Psychology, Biofeedback and EFT for your ears are new on the block
EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) and Hypnosis has shown themselves to be advantageous to returning to people to a better state of hearing. Hearing training is also held in high regard. That’s retraining you ability to “hear” over again. And for some, it really works. Click here for more info on EFT.
As stress is a major cause of high blood pressure and imbalance, Biofeedback and other psychological paradigms can now be considered as viable tools in the tool chest. And last but not least, especially representing the holistic paradigm of healing, is good old everyday “exercise”.

Getting regular exercise is your best friend
You can take all the vitamins and minerals you want and they will only be partially effective. Give yourself a good exercise routine and the value of those supplements you paid highly for start paying you highly in return.
Exercising your mind by learning new things is your next best friend
Exercising your mind by learning new things keeps the memory sharper. Staying socially connected is critically important since loneliness has been clearly shown to exacerbate the decline of your hearing and cognitive (thinking) systems. See our article at this web site on exercises for your ears.
After exercise – watch your diet
Dietary choices have a huge impact on your body. We are what we eat, is a withered but factual statement. If using food for both risk prevention and slowing the progression of hearing loss are your goals, the following supplements will help you gain them back and greatly reduce your chances of hearing losses.
Sugar is your enemy!
First we have to look at the big picture and see some of the things going on that makes hearing loss possible. The first and top of the list is sugar. Carbohydrates specifically. A large recent study drew clear parallels between sugar and presbycusis or age related hearing loss. Just as atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries is a result of to many saturated fats, that also affects your hearing loss. Sodium is another culprit that has clearly studies and shown to predispose you to hearing loss.
Harmful (ototoxic) drugs to your hearing range from aspirin to antibiotics
Heredity and diabetes also play a significant role in the advancement of hearing loss. Recent research from India has shown that antibiotic abuse can be passed down matrilineally and predisposes our children to irreversible auditory dysfunction by distorting our mitochondria, the powerhouses of the cell known for cellular respiration and digestion.
Antibiotic abuse can cause your children to become deaf.
Vasculitis or inflammation of the blood vessels can affect the cochlea, thereby reducing its blood supply to the ears. As well as smoking, hypertension and ototoxic drugs, which include everything from aspirin to antibiotics. People have literally gone stone deaf using Vicodin.
Even though daily use of aspirin or antibiotics can cause hearing loss, two Chinese Doctors have recently found the opposite. You heard it here first folks. By including aspirin with antibiotic use, aspirin actually helped decrease the incidents of hearing loss when combined with the aminoglycocides (antibiotics). Thanks to Jochen Schacht, Ph.D., and Su-Hua Sha, M.D., Their results appear in the April 27 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine.
Ear infections rate pretty high on the scale for hearing impairment. Finally, there is hearing trauma. Trauma caused to your ears from loud music to machinery. To combat this assault on your ears there are many supplements available that can help your hearing and health in general.
The most common decline in hearing is poor nutrition
The most common cause of hearing (and cognitive) decline in the elderly is poor nutrition. People are just not absorbing enough of the specific vitamins and minerals that are helpful in maintaining cognitive function and hearing.
Lack of vitamins like B12 and Folic acid (B9), have been linked to hearing loss that was recently revealed in a study by Pennsylvania’s School of Medicine and many other researchers from around the world. There are other studies in the Journal of Neurological Science and The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition that also agree that supplementing with B6 and B12 have clearly improved hearing.
Order B12 here.
B6, B9, B12, B smart, Take them every day
The Australian National University has clearly shown an improvement in short and long term memory loss and cognitive decline by taking B vitamins. Particularly B12 and B9 or Folic acid.
Order your food based B Complex here.
People over forty don’t digest B vitamins like they used to
One cause of hearing decline is the inflammation of the nervous and vascular systems called homo cysteine which is lowered by the use of folates or folic acid. One of the problems however is that folks over forty stop ingesting B vitamins through the stomach like they used to. Instead, use lots of leafy greens. Like spinach, asparagus, broccoli and kale.
It might not be natural but the studies show that it works
According to Dr. Mark Rosenberg, Tanakan (a pharmaceutical drug) was discovered to reduce tympanitis and improve hearing and speech in aging patients. Suggesting that everyone could increase their hearing and reduce presbycusis (age related hearing loss) with this drug. It might not be natural but the studies show that it works!
And the deaf came back to a hearing life!
“Age-related hearing loss may be retrievable”. Dr. Jonathan Wright.
Another drug/hormone that is just now being put in the spotlight is Aldosterone. According to Dr. Johnathan V. Wright, the Medical Director of the Tahoma Holistic Medical Clinic in Washington and pioneer to the hearing impaired. Three people treated who were hard of hearing or who had lost all of their hearing and were then treated with the bio-identical hormone Aldosterone and were able to regain most of what had been lost.
Presently Dr. Wright is the only known clinic that practices this therapy.
While on the topic of hormone’s, you should know that women who take progesterone or HRT (hormone replacement therapy) experienced a hearing loss to 10 to 30 percent more than those women who don’t!
Hearing loss goes up 10-30% using Hormone Replacement Therapy
A deficiency in any of the many nutrients that vitamins, minerals, hormones or anti oxidants can provide create a host imbalances and dysfunctions in the rest of the body also.

Alcohol is not a friend to your ears
You may have already experienced a night on the town and noticed your hearing is a little fuzzy as you made your way back to your car. Alcohol is one of the biggest contributors to your hearing loss.
Nutrition and Deficiencies
The most widely researched nutrients that have the most impact on your hearing ability are: vitamin A, Alpha lipoic acid, B6, B9 and B12, Vitamin C, Co enzyme Q10, D, Folic Acid, Iodine, Iron, Magnesium and Zinc.
Hearing is your nature, so try nature’s remedies:
Research studies show a five to fifteen percent of the participants improved their hearing naturally when supplemented with vitamin A and E. A deficiency in Vitamin A has also shown itself to be very harmful to the otic capsule and cochlea of the inner ear.
One of the most powerful antioxidants to help protect the immune system and fight free radicals is alpha-lipoic acid. When trying to better your hearing this anti oxidant will help improve or regain hearing lost. Try taking 150 Mg’s a day.
Although still in it’s infancy, a study in 2010 showed that water soluble formula of Co enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) created a distinct increase in tonal audiometry of the middle ear. This is really exciting because it’s helping those three little bones in your middle ear to work better.
Make Co-enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) you next best friend forever.
Study shows lots of Vitamin “C” and “E” clearly help with hearing loss
Dr. Joseph Shargorodsky and his colleagues at Boston’s Brigham Woman’s
Hospital did a study and found that Vitamin “C” and “E” clearly showed an
improvement in hearing loss. He went on to say that combining these
supplements with large amounts of foods high in vitamin “C” and “E” would go a
long way to support the prevention of hearing loss.
Lack of Vitamin D can cause a disorder known as Osteopenia in the three little
hearing bones in the middle ear called ossicles. The softening of the bones due
to a lack of vitamin D can cause hearing loss and even deafness. Interestingly,
by resuming a daily regimen of vitamin D intake can also correct the
condition and in some cases return the person to better hearing.
Folate or Folic Acid
The body’s ability to make RNA, DNA, and new cells in the body depend entirely on having folic acid. A study in the Netherlands proved that lower folate levels were directly related to high pitched hearing loss. People who took folic acid were less likely to experience high pitched hearing loss than those who didn’t. Folic acid is regularly found in spinach, asparagus and broccoli and liver.
The enzyme glutathione’s greatest strength is assisting vitamin C an E in absorption and strengthening the body at the same time. Take 50 mg’s a day.
French research shows that deficiency in iron and iodine play significant parts in their role in many European countries dealing with hearing loss. The hearing loss is found to be greater amongst the children with mild to moderate hearing loss. The studies also show that hearing loss can also be a result of congenital and acquired hypothyroidism, because iodine and iron are a contributing factors in thyroid hormone metabolism imbalance.
Patients in an Iron deficiency study were found to have really low serum and hemoglobin levels. When treated with iron supplements, the result was significantly better than any previous studies showed. It is clinically proven that patients with lowered iron amounts had greater levels of hearing impairment.
Study shows over half the participants who got iron got better hearing.
Taking Magnesium before noise helps. Taking it after helps even more!
Dr. Carolyn Dean who is the author of “The Magnesium Miracle” shows that giving magnesium after noise exposure acted to correct it, and magnesium given before it, helped to prevent it. Apparently industrialized countries have the greatest deficiencies of magnesium intakes.
Have A Banana!
Dr. Jonathan Wright says potassium can play a part in reversing hearing impairment and hearing loss. He says that if you increase your diet with foods rich with potassium like bananas, apricots, greens, melons and oranges and greens, you can reverse your hearing loss trend.
According to Dr. Wright, low potassium levels may play a role in poor hearing and hearing loss. Whether this is due to low potassium intake or poor functioning of potassium channels in your inner ear, Dr. Wright suggests that you supplement your diet and increase your intake of foods rich in potassium. Due to the high potassium content in a variety of fruits, such as apricots, bananas, greens, melons and oranges, Dr. Wright suggests juices or smoothies to increase your potassium intake. Other potassium-rich foods include potatoes, spinach, Lima beans, milk and raisins.
Nearly half of all people over sixty five have less than the recommended daily intake of zinc. It was reported from a National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey that even when dietary supplements are used 20 – 25 % of adults still do not have enough zinc. Zinc is important for oxidative stress and DNA repair. Colds, auto immune disorders, erectile dysfuncion and many types of cancers result from low zinc protection. A well balanced diet gives you your best form of zinc.
For adult men the daily recommendation for zinc is 11 Mg. per day. For women and young teenagers 8 mg. per day. Children should receive no more than 5 mg. of zinc and infants no more than 3mg. a day. Try getting your zinc from meat and fish because there are not a lot of us that can not go to the store to buy raw milk, yoghurt or cheese. A well balance diet is the best way to get your zinc naturally.
Echinacea, Yellow Root, Garlic and Golden seal are nature’s antiseptics
Herbs like Echinacea, Yellow Root, and Golden Seal can empower the immune system and help fight against ear infections. Ear infections contribute greatly to hearing loss. These herbs not only stimulate the flow of bile they can also help with fighting a host of other bacteria, fungi and yeast problems like E Coli and Candida that cause ear infections. Another powerful natural antiseptic that is commonly used for infections is simple garlic juice.
Tea Tree Oil
